Semantics / Bedeutung

Despite the low friction between wheel and rail there is a resistance for the running train. It is composed of several single components. The main influencing factors are train mass, speed, track gradient, curvature and wind. The train's tractive effort must be at least equal to the train resistance in order to maintain the speed or even increasing it. The sum of vehicle resistances is not the total of train resistance due to aerodynamic effects of vehicle formations. Therefore the resistance value is preferable given for the entire formation of the train. Dependent on the purpose there are different formulas used for the calculation of speed related values. RailML offers two basic possibilities of train resistance value representation - valueTable oder mathml.

Attributes of trainResistance / Attribute von trainResistance

  • tunnelFactor: Because of the different aerodynamics in tunnels the train experiences a higher running resistance than on open air. This effect depends on e.g. the tunnel cross section and surface smoothness. This would require an indivdual value for each tunnel. In absence of the exact values the ones of similar tunnels are used. The given value is used as multiplier to increase the ordinary running resistance.
  • strahlFactor (introduced with version 2.4): There is a well established formula for calculation of resistance of the formation developed by Strahl/Sauthoff (Strahl for locomotives and freight wagons and Sauthoff for passenger wagons). The attribute includes the related coefficent used for calculation of train resistance according formula of Strahl/Sauthoff.
  • daviesMassDependent (introduced with version 2.4): There is a well established formula for calculation of resistance of the formation developed by Davies which usually exists in one of the two variants (mass dependent [F=m*g/1000*(A+B*v+C*v^2] or mass independent [F=A+B*v+C*v^2]). With this flag it is decided which of the variants (true = mass dependent) is used to interpret the following coefficients.
  • daviesFactorA (introduced with version 2.4): Coefficent A used for calculation of train resistance according formula of Davies as constant portion
  • daviesFactorB (introduced with version 2.4): Coefficent B used for calculation of train resistance according formula of Davies as speed dependent portion
  • daviesFactorC (introduced with version 2.4): Coefficent C used for calculation of train resistance according formula of Davies as square speed dependent portion

Syntactic Constraints / Syntaktische Beschränkungen

  • strahlFactor xs:decimal, 0 fraction digits, effort value measured in Newton, optional
  • daviesFactorA xs:decimal, 0 fraction digits, effort value measured in Newton, optional
  • daviesFactorB xs:decimal, 0 fraction digits, effort value measured in Newton, optional
  • daviesFactorC xs:decimal, 0 fraction digits, effort value measured in Newton, optional

In case one of the factors is given the application shall ensure the consistency with a given valueTable for the train resistance. It also shall not use both the coefficent strahlFactor and the daviesFactorA..C.
